Introduction & Overview

Border Collies are cute energetic and intelligent dogs, People can recognize them at first glance by their color combinations. Black and white is the most common color, the variation in color combinations of a Border Collie comes in a wide range of standard colors in smooth and rough coats.

Border Collie breed is available in hundreds of colors and patterns.

Black and White Traditional Color, a black coat with white markings.

Black and White

Black and white is by far the most popular color combination for a Border Collie’s coat; it’s just the color combination, most people associate with the breed, that seems to express itself the most. The dogs’ bodies are usually black, with white patterns on their faces and bellies.

Black

Black is one of the rare Border Collie colors. A black Border Collie could include white markings typically in concise sections on their chest, tail, legs, and face, differentiating them from a black and white Border Collie.

Black Tri-Color

The black tri-color Border Collie has less tan and tan circles around each eye that resemble cat eyes, just like the black bi-color. The recessive gene for this color manifestation must be inherited by both parents in order to produce tricolored puppies.

Blue and White

This is where the genetics of Border Collies get intriguing! Genetically, blue and white Border Collies are black and white; however, the color is subdued, resulting in bluish-gray instead of rich black. This gene needs to be present in both parents for a blue and white puppy to be born.

Blue Merle

Blue Merle: Merles are seen in various breeds, despite being one of the more noticeable colorations. A dog with fading gray coats with occasional blue and black spots is called a blue merle. For a dog to have this hue, only one parent needs to carry the dominant modifying gene, which is expressed throughout the dog. Merle dogs typically have lighter eyes and noses. But there’s a price for this beauty. Puppies with blindness or deafness may be produced from breeding two merle parents.

Blue Tri-Color

The dog’s face, chest, back, and eyebrows are highlighted in tan and copper hues, while the rest of its thick coat has a solid blue tri-color pattern. The dominant merle gene and two tri-color genes work together to produce this coat color.

Red

Red is a hue that goes well with many outfits because of its variety of tones, which span from pale golden-red to deep auburn. Since this color is inherited via a recessive gene, both parents must carry two copies of the gene.

Red Merle

Red Merle: A less common expression of the Merle gene, red Merle Border Collies have a coat that is mostly red or liver in color with white and darker markings. Puppies from this breeding combination may also have possible health problems related to the merle gene in addition to having lighter eyes, noses, and paw pigment.

Gold

Among Border Collies, gold is a unique and rare color. Their red coats are diluted, which makes them look a lot like Golden Retrievers. Their hue varies from pale gold to deep gold, but a recessive gene codes for this color.

Chocolate And White

Border Collies’ chocolate hue is recessive, meaning it requires the gene from both parents, making it a little less frequent. They have coats that range in hue from light brown to dark chocolate, with yellow-gold eyes and white patterns on their feet, face, chest, and collar.

Chocolate Tri-Color

Chocolate Tri-Color Chocolate tri-colors are written variety where they have a chocolate color paired with tan or copy & white. Chocolate and tri-color expression require both parents that have a recessive gene.

Lilac

With a blue-gray color scheme rather than lilac purple and warm brown, this might also be rather cool. Since their shine varies, the coat colors give off a lilac appearance. The parents of these puppies are very rare since they must possess the recessive chocolate and dilute gene.

Lilac Merle

Lilac-merle coat pattern, this is a patch combination of solid color and dilute markings—hence the blue-purple effect. Whilst tan points do exist in the lilac-merle Border Collie, both parents must carry two recessive tan genes as well as lilac and merle.

Brindle

A bridle Any color with a tiger-striped pattern can be a border collie. These dogs have tiger-like stripes or streaks in place of patches or spots, giving them a merle-like appearance.

Sable

Sable is a blend of light roots with dark tip hair. They are hardly ever dark in color, as there is a mix of light colors on the coat that makes them appear more gray or sandy-colored than any other. A sable with white markings.

Seal

This color, which only partially expresses the sable gene, is a darker shade of sable that resembles the dark brown or black hue of a seal. These are only a few instances; they may have patches on their seal color.

Slate Merle

They have the same genes as all sables, but their blue merle is paler. Slate merles do, however, have black nostrils as opposed to gray ones like genuine blue merle Aussies.

Piebald

A piebald dog will have a solid white color with asymmetrical spots all over the body. Typically, the head is of a darker or solid color, and the body has black, red, or blue spots, with a lot of white space. Dogs with mainly white heads are predisposed to deafness.

White Ticked

A white-ticked Border Collie presents a coat of two colors, with small black specks over areas of white. This is considered a standard color by most kennel clubs for white-ticked Border Collies, though not for everyone.

Saddleback Sable

The Saddleback Sable resembles a sable or sable tricolor in appearance, with a distinct “saddle” on its back that is surrounded by big patches of white. There might be some tan on their face
