Grooming

Solid doodle types will only need a brush once per week, while Aussies are semi-professional strippers—so regular grooming to keep their grizzled coat and shiny good health. Grooming: These are some basic grooming needs of an Aussie:

Brushing: Frequency: Always brush your Australian Shepherd at least 2–3 times a week to help prevent matting and reduce shedding. A slicker brush or de-shedding tool removes loose fur and prevents tangles. For larger mats, a metal comb will help.

Bathing: Frequency: Bathe them every 6–8 weeks or as necessary according to their level of dirt and odor. Different breeds should not be over-bathed as this can cause their coat to lose its natural oils. Shampoo: Find a dog-specific shampoo so that you do not irritate their skin. Australian Shepherds shed year-round, but they have increased shedding during seasonal changes. Brushing more often controls shedding.

Nail Trimming: Trim the dogs’ nails after 3 to 4 weeks as long nails hurt them. Check ears on a regular basis for debris or signs of infections. Use a vet-recommended ear cleaner as required.

Teeth: Their teeth should be brushed regularly to avoid dental problems. Always brush with dog toothpaste and a canine-focused toothbrush.

Eye Care: Although this may sound extreme, it is still a good idea to check their eyes for any signs of irritation or even discharge if they have not been seen for some time by professional eye care. They can be susceptible to the common eye problems of PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), so keep a constant watch on their eyes.

Routine Check-Ups: Routine grooming appointments with professional groomers can help to keep their coat under control and prevent any potential problems from getting worse.

Adding these grooming habits to your daily schedule creates a happy and dignified Labrador!
